Pass or Point-to-Point?
A rail pass earns its keep when you are moving often and have not fixed your route — several countries in a fortnight, plans made a day or two ahead. Point-to-point tickets are usually cheaper when your itinerary is settled and you are making a handful of long journeys, particularly if you can book them well in advance, because advance fares on high-speed routes are released at a fraction of the walk-up price. We price both ways and show you the difference rather than assuming a pass is always the answer.
Reservations: The Thing That Catches People Out
On many high-speed and cross-border services, a rail pass is not a ticket to board. A compulsory seat reservation is required in addition, the quota of reservation places for pass holders is limited, and on popular routes it sells out weeks ahead in summer. Travellers who arrive at the platform with a valid pass and no reservation are refused boarding. We book the pass and the reservations together so this cannot happen to you.

And where a journey involves a change, allow more than the timetable’s minimum connection if you are carrying heavy bags or travelling with children.
